Deeper in color, richer and more concentrated than the Vieilles Vignes, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Bessade is a new cuvee (I think, it’s the first time I’ve tasted it) that checks in as a blend of 100% Grenache that was brought up first in concrete tanks, then moved to new demi-muids for 15 months. It’s still showing traces of its oak élevage, yet handles it perfectly and sports fabulous black raspberry, cassis, licorice and peppery herb-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated and layered, with excellent mid-palate depth and sweet tannin, it’s hard to resist now, but should have an easy 10-12 years of longevity
